Turkish Citizenship and the E-2 Visa: Opening US Business Doors

October 20, 2026 4 min read IDEX Real Estate

Few people connecting Turkish citizenship and US business immigration end up in the same article. But there’s a strategic pathway that links them — and it’s genuinely useful for a specific investor profile. This article explains the connection clearly.

What Is the E-2 Visa?

The E-2 Treaty Investor Visa allows nationals of countries that have a commerce and navigation treaty with the United States to enter the US to operate a business in which they’ve made a substantial investment. It is not permanent residence — but it provides renewable work authorization in the US, typically in 2-year increments, for as long as the business operates.

Key requirement: you must be a national of a country that has a treaty with the US.

The Turkey → E-2 Connection

Turkey has an E-2 treaty with the United States. Turkish citizens are eligible to apply for the E-2 visa. Most Arab countries (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Iraq) do not have E-2 treaties with the US.

This creates a specific strategic pathway: obtain Turkish citizenship → use Turkish passport to apply for US E-2 investor visa.

The Strategic Profile This Serves

This pathway is specifically relevant for investors who:

  1. Hold a passport from a non-E-2-treaty country (most Arab nations)
  2. Have or plan to establish a business in the US
  3. Have $400,000+ available for a Turkish real estate investment
  4. Would also need a minimum US business investment (typically $100,000–$200,000 for an E-2 application)

The E-2 Requirements (US Side)

Holding a Turkish passport makes you eligible to apply — but the E-2 has its own requirements:

  • Substantial investment: No fixed minimum, but USCIS typically expects $100,000+ (and many consular posts set higher informal expectations). The investment must be “at risk” — deployed into the business, not in a bank account
  • The investment must be substantial relative to the total cost of the enterprise
  • The enterprise must be real and operating — not a passive investment
  • You must have day-to-day management control of the business
  • The business must generate more than marginal income — not just support the investor alone

Timeline: The Full Pathway

Step Timeline
Purchase Turkish property + begin citizenship process Month 1–2
Receive Turkish citizenship and passport Month 8–14
Establish US business and deploy E-2 investment Month 12–18
Apply for E-2 visa at US consulate Month 14–20
E-2 visa approved, enter US Month 18–24

Total pathway: approximately 18–30 months from Turkish property purchase to US business entry.

Limitations: What the E-2 Is Not

  • It is not a green card — it does not lead to permanent residence directly
  • It is tied to the business — if the business closes, the visa status ends
  • Dependents can live and study in the US on E-2 dependent status, but cannot work (without separate authorization)
  • Renewal is indefinite as long as the business continues meeting requirements

Is This a Well-Known Strategy?

In immigration attorney circles — yes. Among Arab investors in the Gulf — largely unknown. This is one reason this article exists: to make a genuine strategic option visible to investors who may benefit from it.
